Growing up in the small town of Redcliff, Alberta Canada I always felt that New York City was the place to
be. From the age of 16 I knew that the big apple was where I was going to end up. Living in the city has
proven to be a dream come true for me. I'll never forget the Goosebumps I felt the first time I walked down
Wall Street. Walking the "playing field" that so many of the gurus I had studied left their mark on was a truly
powerful moment for me.
I have achieved a double major in Marketing and Management from Medicine Hat College just outside of
where I grew up. I was working full-time shift work simultaneously with my studies which resulted in 70 hour
weeks. I still remember getting off shift sleeping for 30 minutes before getting up for a full day of school. In
the end I managed a 3.3 G.P.A which wasn't half bad considering I was generally so tired I rarely knew
whether or not I was coming or going!
In addition to commodities I am interested in mountain climbing. My first climb happened to be Mt.
McKinley in Alaska in 2000. As this was my first climb I was ranked last on the team. The stronger the
climber the higher on the list you rose. After 14 days on the mountain we reached the summit. I ended up
being in the lead team coupled with 3 native Alaskans. It was another one of those moments you never
forget and is always in the back of my mind.
Another climb that had less successful results was Mt.Aconcagua in Argentina in 2002. I had the misfortune
of contracting altitude sickness and pulmonary edema at the same time (imagine a coffee pot bubbling in
your chest.) I had to be evacuated from the mountain. I don't mind setbacks, life is more about how you
bounce back from adversity than simply winning at everything you attempt. I will be going back to Argentina
for round two, same route, solo this time!
I also spent 6 months on the Pacific Crest Trail back in 1995. My first ever backpacking trip ended up lasting
half a year and encompassed 2700 miles from the Mexican Border town Campo to home (Canada) Manning
Park B.C. The trail has been the most dramatic and powerful experience of my life. I've never before faced
challenges of that magnitude and frequency.
Anyone who is interested in getting involved with the markets is welcome to call me. I never tire
of conversations on the markets (as my friends will attest to.) Trading is always a tough business and can be
a lonely one as well. It does help to be able to pick up the phone and talk or vent to someone who has been
there and knows exactly what you're going through.
The way I trade managed accounts is through the use of options. I will initiate an option position in the
direction of the trend. I will then trade against the position with futures. Generally I buy 2 calls or puts and
trade 1 contract against it. This is much the same principal that many hedge funds use when they run a
long/short position. It is much easier to get in and out of the futures markets than it is the options markets.
To take advantage of consolidations in trends and pullbacks in trends the buying or selling of futures against
puts/calls can allow for additional opportunities. If the market runs I'll be net long 2 against 1 short which still
allows for the hedge to remain in effect. If it goes hard against me I'm long/short 1 future against my
calls/puts.
